Title: Sustainability Manager
Hanne Camilla works with sustainability at the electricity company Tibber. Among other things, her job is to keep carbon inventory and engage in business development. We had a chat with her about electricity and sustainability, to be able to give you some concrete tips on how to run a more sustainable business.
What is Tibber?
Tibber is a different power company. We do not profit more the more electricity we sell, so we have an incentive to help our customers use less electricity. This is the one thing I like best about Tibber.
How can electricity be sustainable?
First and foremost, it must be renewable! But even renewable energy has a small footprint associated with production. In our climate accounts, we calculate that the electricity we buy (with guaranteed origin from Norwegian hydropower) has an emission of 3 grams of CO2 per kwh. That’s why we say that the greenest power is the one you do not use! Good old-fashioned energy saving is still very relevant.
We can also talk about load and mains, and this is cooler than it sounds. Over the next few decades, Norway’s energy need will grow significantly and we will need a much larger power grid. By using the network more efficiently, we can reduce development. For example smart charging of electric cars can reduce an estimated investment need by as much as 11 billion NOK. So these are measures that actually pay off. Source
So what are your top energy saving tips for rental businesses?
Smart heat control is what we see gives the best effect in private homes, whether it is smart panel heaters, thermostats, and such. Most people have more than enough to think about already, smart temperature control also means saved time. Other tips are to use LED lights instead of traditional halogen lights and of course to facilitate for EV-charging.
Do you have any other tips on how rental businesses can become more sustainable?
For those of you who rent to holiday guests – how about having bikes available for rent? And tell guests about nearby attractions? Or equip the homes with all the little things one may need in the everyday life, but may not have remembered to bring? For example, good water bottles or carrying nets that one would otherwise buy new? Those who are really eager can improve the energy efficiency of the rental units, e.g. by re-insulating or replacing old windows.
